  • Seconds Got an Ending Make You go, “Oh shite”

Just finished watching the 1966 film Seconds, directed by John Frankenheimer, with a screenplay by Lewis John Carlino, based on a novel by David Ely. I’d read about how creepy it was in Gary A. Braunbeck’s non-fiction book To Each Their Darkness and figured what the hey.
And boy, are these some sloppy seconds (don’t throw the tomatoes all at once, I couldn’t help myself). I don’t want to spoil much, so one sentence plot time. Middle-aged man unhappy with life is offered a second chance and new identity, with horrifying results.
There are some really unnerving close ups, and some fun shots where we get to ride around on our main characters shoulder, wee! The film is in black and white, but if you can’t handle a lack of color, stick to movies in 3D, you plebs.
I’m a big fan of films where people go to a shadowy organization, which turns out to be super screwed up. Seconds contains just such an organization.
It’s short, just around an hour and a half. Rock Hudson gives a great performance, as a man who now looks like, and has the life of another man. Also, the mayor from Jaws stars, Murray Hamilton. I love that dude.
What really stuck with me was the ending. It kicks your ass. Give it a view if you can find it. It’s out on the dvds, and is available through the Netflix (though not instantly).
