Marabou Stork Nightmares Review

I’d never heard of Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, and when I initially researched the first thing that I thought was, oh the Trainspotting guy. Having read Marabou Stork Nightmares, I can now say I’m thoroughly ashamed I’ve never read him before. It was such an interesting book, such a fascinating character study. It was surreal, horrible, and depressing, and it really floored me.
The only thing I had a little trouble with, was when Irvine chooses to write Scottish accents phonetically on the page. Yet, even this became like a game, and didn’t affect my enjoyment of the novel. The playful way that Welsh changes the font and fucks with the line structure is quite poetic, and a lot of fun to see.
I highly recommend this book, though be forewarned it is really depressing. But in a good way.
